This Blueberry Mojito (with Kiwi and Spiced Rum) recipe is the perfect, refreshing summer cocktail. Sweet, juicy blueberries, combine with tart, tangy kiwi, zesty lime, fresh mint, sugar, a boozy kick of spiced rum, and fizzy club soda for an invigorating party in your mouth.
While this Kiwi Blueberry Mojito recipe is great for spring or summer, it can be prepared year-round for a mental escape to the Caribbean. I love to make a Blueberry Mojito for a post-work happy hour on our back patio, pool day with friends, or to serve at bridal or baby showers. It would also be perfect for Easter brunch or Mother’s Day. You can prepare this recipe as a single serving or large batch for parties. It takes only five minutes to mix up and is incredibly easy! The flavors of the kiwi and blueberry compliment each other well, balancing the sweet and tartness of each. They also give the Kiwi Blueberry Mojito a vibrant, interesting color that is a crowd-pleaser.
The Classic Mojito
While this Kiwi Blueberry Mojito is the focus of the post, I want to take a moment to explain the basics of a mojito. The classic mojito originates from Cuba, and it very commonly served throughout the Caribbean. We travel to the Caribbean frequently, and mojitos are one of my favorite tropical drinks to order. They’re sweet, but not TOO sweet. And nothing is more refreshing while relaxing on the beach in the sun. It was in St Lucia that I fell in love with frozen mojitos which is an easy, alternative way to serve this Kiwi Blueberry Mojito. If you’re looking to book a trip to St Lucia, I also have a travel guide here.
The classic mojito is made of five ingredients: white rum, mint, sugar, lime, and club soda. It doesn’t get simpler than that. Cane sugar is typically used; however, you’ll find many bartenders and recipes (this one included) use simple syrup as it mixes easier with liquids. More on that below.
Ingredients
Rum
As stated above, the classic mojito utilizes white rum (also known as silver or blanco). For this Kiwi Blueberry Mojito, though, I used a rum that we picked up in St Lucia called Chairman's Reserve Spiced Rum. With notes of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, and coconut it gives the cocktail a unique spicy and slightly smoky taste that is delicious. And makes it appropriate for drinking right into fall. Any white or spiced rum will work well with this recipe though. Use whatever you have on hand, a favorite, or try out something new. We always like to purchase liquor that is native to the places we travel for variety.
Mint
Fresh mint is a huge part of what makes a mojito a mojito. It is 100% mandatory for this Blueberry Mojito recipe. Look for healthy, large mint leaves if shopping at your local store. If the mint is shriveled up, it can end up tasting bitter in your mojito. Spearmint is what is commonly sold and which I recommend for this recipe. It sweeter than peppermint. Growing fresh mint in an herb garden is what I do. It’s incredibly easy and will give you a steady supply all summer long!
Fresh Lime
Fresh lime is also a requirement for this Kiwi Blueberry Mojito. It makes a huge difference in the flavor of the cocktail compared to using non-fresh. Some people will swap lemon juice but that also completely changes the flavor of the drink in my opinion.
Sugar or Simple Syrup
The classic mojito uses cane sugar, however I like to use simple syrup. It blends with the cocktail much better. You can purchase simple syrup or save some money and make your own. All you need is sugar and water!
Simply bring ½ cup water and ½ cup sugar to boil in a small saucepan, reduce heat to simmer, and cook for about five minutes stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely before using. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
If you’d like to up the blueberry flavor even MORE in this mojito recipe, you can also add fresh blueberries while your simple syrup is simmering to make a blueberry simple syrup. Delicious. Strain them out once the syrup is complete.
Fresh Blueberries
Blueberries give this cocktail a sweet, fruity kick. In season during the summer, we love to go blueberry picking which is not only a fun day date or family activity, but which yields tons of the tasty fruit. I have lots of other blueberry recipes on C&C like these Homemade Blueberry Muffins.
Kiwi
Kiwi might not be the first ingredient you’d think to add to a cocktail but trust me. Kiwis are sweet yet tangy and tart with tropical notes that pair well with the mojito.
Club Soda
Used to top the Kiwi Blueberry Mojito, club soda gives the cocktail a fizziness that goes perfectly with the rest of the refreshing elements. You can also use sparkling water.
Kiwi Blueberry Mojito Instructions
In order to fully incorporate the kiwi flavor into this mojito without having large chunks of kiwi, I use a blender, food processor or magic bullet. I only combine the kiwi, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice this way. Mix well then set aside.
Meanwhile, in a tall glass add spiced rum, blueberries, and mint. Muddle well. The process of muddling releases the flavors of the blueberries and mint into the rum. If you don’t have a muddler, the back of a spoon or small spatula works fine to smash them into the liquid. I recommend picking one up if you enjoy making cocktails though! Try this one.
Next, pour the kiwi mixture into the glass. Add ice and give it a few good stirs. Top with club soda. Garnish with a mint sprig, kiwi slice, and some blueberries. Enjoy the most refreshing Kiwi Blueberry Mojito.
Note: you can add the blueberries and mint to the blender with the kiwi if you don’t want any bits of fruit/herbs in the drink or simply strain them out after muddling.
Variations and Substitutions
You can change up the fruit and/or herbs used in this mojito. Make a mixed berry mojito by adding some blackberries, raspberries, and/or strawberries. Basil is also delicious in this drink alongside the mint.
Honey or agave can also be used in place of sugar or simple syrup.
Tip: make ice cubes with tiny bits of mint in them. That way when your ice melts it freshens your Blueberry Mojito with more mint!
FAQs
Can I make this cocktail a mocktail/virgin?
Definitely! Omit the rum and fill the glass all the way up with club soda to make a Blueberry Mojito Mocktail.
What alcohol is best to use in a mojito? Do I have to use rum?
Rum is the standard liquor used in mojitos. I like to use a spiced rum for this Blueberry Mojito recipe, but any will do. If you just aren’t a fan of rum, try this recipe with vodka. It won’t taste exactly the same but will have all the other flavor elements. The ingredients used in this cocktail would also taste great with tequila or gin. It would be very different from a mojito at that point though.
Can I make this drink into a frozen mojito?
Absolutely! In order to turn this Kiwi Blueberry Mojito into an even more refreshing, frozen cocktail, simply add all ingredients to the blender with ice and blend. Easy and perfect for a hot summer day.
Is a mojito a strong cocktail?
It contains a good pour of rum, but no other liquor making mojitos pretty standard in terms of alcohol content. You can add more or less rum based on your preferences.
Can I make this Blueberry Mojito less sweet?
While I don’t think this recipe is that sweet, you can definitely make it less by adding a few dashes of Angostura bitters. The kiwi definitely balances the sweetness of this cocktail though, in comparison to other straight blueberry mojitos.
Can I make a large batch of this cocktail for a party?
You can make a large batch of Kiwi Blueberry Mojito by tripling or quadrupling this recipe and serving in a pitcher or drink dispenser like this one. Just make sure you leave out the ice and club soda until right before serving to keep it from becoming watered down or the club soda going flat.
