We finally made it to the weekend which calls for a much deserved handcrafted cocktail. I introduce to you the Boozy Blood Orange which is pretty self-explanatory. This drink features rye whiskey and blood oranges. It also contains mint, Angostura bitters and club soda.
I love using Blood Oranges in cocktails. Not only do they have great flavor, but I also love their dark color. They taste similar to standard navel oranges, however they are a little more bitter and less acidic. They're also in season right now! I'm also really enjoying Woodford Reserve's Rye. You'll pick up heavy notes of spice and fruit. Rye whiskey must be made from at least 51% rye. Woodford's is 53%. I like using rye whiskey in cocktails, because it adds more flavor than a standard bourbon. It also very smooth.
To make this bad boy add mint leaves, blood orange slices & blood orange juice to a shaker. Muddle the orange slices and mint into the liquid. Add ice and shake well. Strain into a glass with ice. Stir in whiskey and bitters. Top with club soda. Garnish with a slice of that gorgeous blood orange! Cheers!!
- 3 oz rye whiskey
- 4 slices of blood orange
- ½ cup freshly squeezed blood orange juice
- 3 mint leaves
- 2-3 shakes of Angostura bitters
- club soda
- Add mint leaves, 3 of the 4 orange slices & blood orange juice to a shaker.
- Muddle the orange slices and mint into the liquid.
- Add ice. Shake well.
- Strain into a glass with ice.
- Stir in whiskey and bitters.
- Top with club soda.
- Garnish with remaining orange slice.
