One of the very first meals Brad made for me when we started dating and countless times since was his stromboli. I remember back before we lived together going over to his house in Victorian Village when he would whip it up for his roommates and I while watching football and drinking beer. Memories. His original version was made with store bought dough and jarred marinara. Since then we usually tag team it, and my contribution is my homemade pizza dough and homemade marinara. Either way is great! Store bought definitely saves you time, but you know me and I love to make anything I can from scratch. If you choose to go the homemade route see my pizza dough recipe below:
When we use store bought dough we usually get it from the freezer section which means you'll need to plan time to let it thaw. Open it up and set it in a pan on the counter for about 6 hours. While your dough is finishing thawing (or rising if you do the homemade version) prepare your marinara. You will need: olive oil, tomato sauce, tomato paste, red wine, onion, garlic, basil, oregano, parsley, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper and bay leaves.
Start by heating some olive oil in a medium pot over medium heat. Add onion and sauté for a few minutes. Add garlic and sauté a couple more. Pour in your tomato sauce, paste and red wine. Bring to a boil then reduce heat. Stir in all spices. Simmer for about 30 minutes or until reaches desired consistency. Be sure to keep warm while making your stromboli.
For the strom you'll need your dough, Italian seasoning, pepperoni, salami, banana peppers, provolone cheese, fresh Parmesan and sesame seeds.
Roll out your dough into an oval shape. Season with Italian seasoning.
Top entire dough with provolone cheese.
Layer on pepperoni.
Sprinkle on banana peppers.
Then salami with some fresh ground pepper on top.
Fresh Parm of course.
Roll it on up. (You can see videos of this on my instagram highlights @cuisineandcocktails.)
Use a little egg white or water to seal if needed. Sprinkle with more fresh Parm and sesame seeds.
Bake at 400 degrees for about 15-20 minutes or until reaches desired crispiness!
Cut into smaller pieces and serve with your marinara! This is the perfect dish for football season and great for serving guests. You can even make ahead of time and freeze! Enjoy!
