I wasn't a huge fan of Sloppy Joes growing up. I was very picky and didn't like peppers or onions or really anything mixed into my ground beef. So picky in fact I couldn't have any of my foods touching each other on my plate and made my mom pick cooked carrots out of all my soups, because I thought carrots were not meant to be mushy (God bless you mom LOL). At least my parent's Sloppys were homemade, and they never attempted to serve me canned Manwich like so many of my friends grew up eating (they knew that wouldn't go over well). But before you think I am a complete spoiled brat, let's get back to my homemade Sloppy Joe recipe. 🙂 Clearly I love them now - especially this recipe I've experimented with for a long time now.
For this recipe you will need ground beef, tomato sauce, ketchup, onion, garlic, green pepper, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, brown sugar, ground mustard, oregano, paprika, salt, pepper, buns, pickles and sliced cheese (optional). I also use two types of pickles but also optional!
Preheat oven to 350. Brown ground beef and drain grease. Stir in onion and green pepper and sauté for a few minutes. Add garlic and cook one more.
Add tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire and brown sugar. Stir well to incorporate.
Bring to a slight boil and stir in spices. Turn down heat to low. Cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Place buns on a baking sheet in oven to toast for a few minutes to toast. If you'd like cheese, add a slice to the tops to melt. I like pepperjack with these.
Spoon sloppiness into the bun. Top with lots of yummy pickles. Have I mentioned that pickles are a food group to me? And that's it! Through much trial and error of ingredients I have found the perfect combination of savory, spice and sweet. At least in my opinion - let me know what you think!
I like to serve Sloppy Joes with homemade fries, corn on the cob or other seasonal veggies!
